THE FINNISH FOLK MUSIC COMPETITION IN ACCORDION PLAYING

Finland’s oldest continuously arranged accordion competition is happening for the fifty-first time. During the competition, you can hear the finest melodies in accordion music performed by skilled musicians. The competition is also part of contemporary vibes through its FOLK category.

The competition is organized by the Finnish Accordion Association in cooperation with Sata-Häme Soi. Administering the competition is Seppo Lankinen, vice president of the association.

COMPETITION INVITATION, 2023

The Finnish Accordion Association hereby invites accordionists to the Finnish Folk Music Championships in Accordion Playing, 2023.

The competitions will happen in Ikaalinen’s Oma Tupa hall (Teinintie 4-6) on Thursday 29.6.2023, beginning at 10.00 am.

The player with the highest score in the competition will receive a 300€ stipend in both the one-row, two-row, and five-row categories. Players winning an award will be invited to perform at the ‘Folk Musician Masters Through The Years’ concerts, which will happen in various places during autumn and winter.

CATEGORIES

  • 9 years of age (born on or after 1.7.2013)
  • 12 years of age (born on or after 1.7.2010)
  • 15 years of age (born on or after 1.7.2007)
  • 18 years of age (born on or after 1.7.2004)
  • General (no age limit)
  • Veterans (over 50 years of age)
  • FOLK (no age limit; the instrument can be few-rowed, five-rowed, or a piano accordion)

COMPETITION PROGRAMME

The one-row and two-row categories:
two traditional Finnish one or two-row songs, of which one is a polka and the other a dance number of the accordionist’s choice. Style-appropriate original compositions are permitted.

The five-row category:
two traditional Finnish accordion pieces, of which one is a polka and the other a jenkka, masurkka, waltz, polska, march, foxtrot, or tango. Style-appropriate original compositions are permitted.

The FOLK category:
a freely chosen programme of songs. The accordion can be a few-row, five-row, or piano model. No age limit exists. The playing will include two pieces of new folk, world music, or original, modern folk music compositions.

REGISTRATION

There is no participation fee, but participants should be members of the Finnish Accordion Association.

Registration for the competition should happen by 9.6.2023 at the latest by contacting the association’s office at toimisto@harmonikkaliitto.fi with your details.

Include:
your name, address, phone number, date of birth, and the division(s) you plan to enter (two-row or five-row), with the pieces you plan to play, including their composers.

Type as the subject of your email the phrase:
‘Ilmoittautuminen Pelimannimestaruuskilpailuun’ (Registration for the Folk Musician Competition).

The association office will acknowledge receiving your email within three days. If you receive no acknowledgement, call the office at 03 440 0222.
